Real artists ship.

McCarthy Digital is a consultancy designed to help publishers navigate an ever-changing marketplace. For 13 years, I’ve forged new ground in Web Development, eCommerce, Digital Product Development, and Consumer Marketing, as a senior executive at Penguin and Random House (see About Us for more detail). I’ve enjoyed successes (and a few inevitable failures!) in what has so far been a fascinating exploration of the digital world. In embracing this new role, I will be providing a number of great services (see full list here), but today I just want to say hello and provide some idea of what you can expect at McCarthy-Digital.com.
As you might guess, a blog will be the key component of the site. Over the years, I’ve been asked about blogging and I always described it as a “tapeworm” — a parasite I thought would consume precious energy that could be directed toward something else. However, that was when I was in the corporate world and my days consisted of chock-a-block meetings and hundreds upon hundreds of emails. One of the benefits of consulting is that it affords me the time to think, learn, analyze, and synthesize. In fact, it demands that I do those things on a daily basis. Writing has always clarified my thinking and, now, it can allow me to enter the broader discussion of the issues facing publishers today. I welcome the opportunity and look forward to hearing what you have to say.
In terms of what to expect, here are some topics I’ll be covering:
- Marketing
- eBooks
- eCommerce
- Innovation
- SEO
- SEM
- Social Media
- Technology
My aspiration is to post at least three times a week and to have it read as a coming together of Mashable, MarketingProfs, and Publishers Lunch. That is what I want to read and that is what I hope to write.
I am committed to providing the content in any manner you wish to consume it. To that end, you can receive posts via email or RSS reader, follow me on Twitter, “like” McCarthy Digital on Facebook, connect with me on LinkedIn, follow or add me to your circles on Google+ (at least until I tire of it completely, which is fodder for a future post!), or just come back and visit the site from time to time.
Feel free to contact us with anything from an idea for a blog post or a quick “hello” to a full blown RFP. We are here and open for business.
There is never a good time to start. Or to stop, for that matter. There is always one more thing to do, one more bug to iron out, one more feature to add, and so on. I’ve come to the moment where I stop preparing and ship the product. Here it is.
Thanks for reading this inaugural post. Have a great day.
